Setting up your system

1. Collect all your Internet log files into a single directory.

You should go through all the settings, from the [Database] tab to the [FTP] tab. This is step 2-6.

2. You do not need a database in the beginning, so simply make sure the Add to database option is disabled.

3. Select the format your log files are in (IIS or Apache/UNIX).

4. Enter the path of this directory on the [Paths] tab and press RETURN.

5. Switch to the [Files] tab and make sure LogReader found the right files.

6. Both the [Downloads], [Ignore], and [Ignore Users] tabs are optional and you can skip them in the beginning.

For more accurate statistics you will want to enable these features at a later point. To do so is identical for all 3 options:

6.1 Enable the option

6.2 Highlight (set focus) on the list

6.3 Press the Insert (INS) key to insert a new item, or the Delete (DEL) key to remove an item.

For example, let's switch to the [Downloads] tab and set up some page extensions that should be considered a Download. A typical download extensions is ".mp3", so we will add that to the list. Press the Insert (INS) key while the list is highlighted, then enter "mp3" (without the quotes) and press RETURN. Now, if you enable the option above the list, all requests for pages or files with an extension of .mp3 will count as a download.

To remove this download extension again, highlight the mp3 entry in the list, press the Delete (DEL) key, then answer Yes to the prompt.

IIS

To process IIS 4/5 log files, select the [IIS] format on the [Format] tab. IIS includes the Site IP, so you do not need to enter your site's IP address.

UNIX

To process Apache log files, select the [UNIX] format on the [Format] tab. Apache does not include the Site IP, so you must enter your site's IP address in the Site IP field.

Processing your files

When the list of files on the [Files] tab is correct, and some or all of the files are selected, you can click on the [Import] button to start processing the files. If you do not use a database, this is pretty quick as the data is read to memory. You can see in the status bar what LogReader is currently doing, and how it is proceeding.

When the Import process is completed, a message is shown (by default). This can be disabled by disabling the "Show import completion message" option in the [Options] menu.

If the "Start Excel automatically" option is enabled in the [Options] menu, the Analyze function is started automatically.

Please see "Analyze with Excel" for further information.

Reviewing the statistics

Please see the for further information about the statistics shown on screen.

Saving the report

A report includes the statistics shown on screen, and additional information about the files and pages found. You can save the report by choosing the [File | Save report] menu option.

Analyze with Microsoft Excel

The "Analyze with Excel" feature is available by selecting the [File | Analyze with Excel] menu option. This will generate a new Workbook, with 8 sheets of statistics and data. This allows you to analyze the data further, creating your own lists and totals as desired. Naturally, you must have Microsoft Office installed for this to work.
